"We are what we eat", a familiar saying and so it is with the earth.
Everything that grows depends on the health of the soil just as our bodies
depend on a healthy immune system. Soil does not remain healthy and strong
with chemical fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers feed only the plants directly.
Nothing is done for the soil.
Organic fertilizers go into the soil, breakdown slowly making nutrients available
to the plants as needed while also working with the bacteria and micro-organisms
present in the soil.
Lake Tahoe's soil consists mostly of decomposed granite or sand. Our soil must
be amended in order to hold moisture and nutrients for flowering plants and trees
not native to our area.
Adding organic compost to the soil is the most efficient way to achieve this. It also prevents nitrogen dumping directly into our lake causing rapid algae growth and loss of clarity.
